Get one hour AIA LU/HSW credit for face-to-face instruction of Design Professionals in the importance of the NYS Property Maintenance Code (PMC) in both its relevance in the design and engineering of building projects as well as its general requirements and intents as they apply to existing buildings whether subject to new work or not.  The objective is to provide the Design Professional with a better base of knowledge in how to include the PMC in their design and engineering endeavors, how to use the PMC in educating building owners in their ongoing responsibilities after the design services are completed, and how to use the PMC as a tool in advocating for more sustainable buildings and communities.  The course is presented from the perspective of a practicing Forensic Architect using case studies from various post-construction investigations and expert witness services in litigation matters to assist in reinforcing the applicable importance of professional licensing standards, code compliance regulations, and common contract obligations relevant to matters governed by the NYS Property Maintenance Code

Course Learning Objectives:

To understand the history of Property Maintenance Codes’ intent to provide and maintain structures in a safe, durable and habitable condition.

To understand the purpose of the Property Maintenance Code and it’s role in community relations, community values, and public safety.

To understand the application of health, safety, and public welfare elements of the Property Maintenance Code as they apply not only to existing structures, but to the design of new structures as well.

To reinforce the importance and value of the Property Maintenance Code in planning for a safe new building as well as its importance as buildings transition to their long-term useful lives.
